Hollywood is pushing out the news as we head into a holiday weekend, and we round up the top stories here.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (see “’D&D’ Trailer“) opened stronger than tracking had indicated, with $38.5 million in domestic box office and $33 million from overseas territories for a total of $71.5 million, according to Deadline. The film cost $150 million to make, not including marketing, so still has a way to go to break even, but there’s plenty of upside, according to the report, with many students off for spring break this week and high grades from people who saw the movie, indicating good word of mouth.
Marvel has released a new trailer for Secret Invasion, which launches on Disney+ on June 21. The series features Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who returns to Earth to stop a Skrull subversive plot. Other actors in the series include Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull Talos, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/Warmachine, Kinglsey Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, and Emilia Clarke. An initial trailer was released around D23 last year (see “’Secret Invasion’ Trailer“).
Netflix has ordered the Scott Pilgrim anime to series, and the entire main cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the 2010 live action feature, will return to voice the series: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong. Other details are much the same as when the anime was first announced as in development last year (see “’Scott Pilgrim’ Anime Series“). The 2010 film, which had modest box office success (see “’Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’“), nonetheless was something of a cult hit and put the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels on the bestseller charts across channels for months.
Paramount+ has placed a series order for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, a new live action series that will begin production in 2024, the streamer announced. Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau will be co-showrunners. The show will be set on the legendary campus of the elite training facility for Starfleet, where cadets are educated and trained to become Starfleet officers, and follow a young group of cadets as they come of age.
Cobalt Knight has acquired film rights to Capstone board game Terra Mystica, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cobalt Knight, co-founded by former Sega of America creative leader Christopher Kaminski and Christopher Knox, acquired the rights to Terraforming Mars last year (see “’Terraforming Mars’ Optioned“). Capstone acquired the English language rights to Terra Mystica in 2020, when it broadened its partnership with Feuerland Spiele (see “Capstone Picks Up ‘Terra Mystica’“).
Marvel has released a new teaser trailer for Guardians of the GalaxyVol. 3, which will be released in Marvel’s favorite annual release slot in the first weekend of May (May 5).
