The GI Joe Classified line is finding the perfect groove. It was almost inevitable that one of them would end up being my pick for Best of 2022. But the best of the best had to have one thing that pulled it ahead of a batch of strong contenders.
That one thing…was hands.
The Classified line is without a doubt my favorite current line. I have what I will confess are ridiculously exacting standards for what I want to see, but despite that the line has for the most part eased into a consistent winning streak. Sure, there are a few bumps, but that’s just down to my biases.
I could easily have chosen Dr. Mindbender, Serpentor, Tiger Force Outback, Spirit, Croc Master…you see where I’m going with this. There was a lot of competition. The line was that good this year. But Sgt. Slaughter did literally everything it needed to do, and it did it at the highest possible level, by including multiple hand choices. Sarge can point. He can grab. He can punch. He can shoot. He can do it all, and he can do it with style.
That is the one area I’d like to see the Joe line step into with every release, and not just a deluxe special occasion. Trigger, expressive and fist hands for every figure would blow my fragile little mind. Sure, the price might jump a bit, but…I think I’d be okay with it, if it meant that extra play value.
Sgt. Slaughter is the shining example of taking a figure that I loved as a kid and bringing it into the 21st century. It tugs at all of those nostalgia muscles, but it also stands shoulder to shoulder with the best action figures around.
Plus, he gets major bonus points for coming with his own action figure.
You just don’t see that every day.
