Wizards of the Coast Bans a ‘Magic: the Gathering’ Card Over Accessibility Concerns

Wizards of the Coast has banned a Magic: The Gathering card over accessibility concerns. There were two cards total banned in the latest Banned and Restricted List Announcement.

The cards banned in the latest Banned and Restricted List Announcement were as follows:

  • Yorion, Sky Nomad was banned in Modern.
  • The Meathook Massacre was banned in Standard.

Yorion, Sky Nomad was banned in Modern because it required players to use an 80-card deck, which in the Modern format, posed physical dexterity requirements to play the deck. Modern features fetch lands and a number of cards that would require a player to shuffle it. WotC felt as though that shuffling an 80-card deck repeatedly during tournament play was a cumbersome and challenging maneuver for players with limited physical dexterity. The other factor that contributed to Yorion’s banned was that the card’s repeated triggers caused long games. Thus, Yorion, Sky Nomad was banned from Modern.

Meathook Massacre was banned in Standard because Black decks were simply overpowered in that format after the addition of Liliana of the Veil to the format, post-Dominaria United (see “‘Dominaria United’ Release“). They banned Meathook Massacre to tone down the Black decks and allow other decks to emerge as viable play options.Source: ICv2
