Gridiron Studios: Jet Pack with Jump Station

When I was a kid, there was nothing I wanted to do more than fly around on a jet pack. I was fascinated with the idea and loved to see on the screen and act it out with my action figures. I think it is a big part of why I found the Boba Fett figure so fun. One of the most appealing toys from the original G.I. Joe line for me was the jet pack, so I’ve been waiting for one for the Classified line. Fortunately, I don’t have to wait any longer because the good people at Gridiron Studios have made their own jet pack that is compatible with six inch scale figures. Let’s take a look!

The set comes with a launchpad computer station, the pack, a flight helmet, two blast effects, and a clear dowel.

The jump pad comes in 7 pieces, a main tower, a black plastic fuel tank with flexible hose that attaches to the tower, a platform, and four legs that attach to the platform. The legs plug into the platform and the main tower with the computer and fuel station hooks onto the platform. I love the little computer station detail on the back and the rivets on the launch pad base. There are little raised Gridiron Studios logos on all the pieces including the center of the platform.

The peg on the pack can plug into a hole in the main tower for easy storage and the fuel pump can plug into two holes on the back of the pack. I do wish the screen on the computer station had a decal or a different color, so I might look into adding some sort of screen element later.

The pack itself has the general shape of the old G.I. Joe jetpack, but there is quite a bit more detail packed in there with additional steering jets and all sorts of excellent techno-greeblies on the back. There are also removeable arms on the pack, one with a steering joystick and one with a gun. It’s all clearly inspired by they Joe jet pack, but they have done their own thing with it.

The helmet is made from a flexible plastic and fits on a variety of six inch scale heads and works great on Duke and Flint.

The pack fits into the peg hole on the back of Classified figures and the figure can grip the control and gun arms. When equipped, the overall effect reminds me a bit of the Jet Pack James Bond used in Thunderball.

You can choose to streamline it and remove one or both of the control arms.

The blast effects plug into the main jets and have a great flaming orange translucent color that picks up lights really well.

One of my favorite features is that they designed the jump platform to serve as a flight stand and the included clear dowel plugs into a hole in the pack and the platform. The materials feel very sturdy for 3D printed pieces and have a flex to them that feels more like toy-grade PVC than most 3D printed stuff I’ve handled. The hose piece is nice and flexible and the pieces are are painted simply and cleanly in a perfect military green. It might be fun to add a little light weathering at some point, but they look at home with Classified figures as is.

This is a really fun little set that adds a ton of play value to my classified collection. I think I might have Duke rocking this thing as the centerpiece of my Joe shelf. It is a bit on the pricey side for an accessory set, but this is a low-run, high quality, hand made product, so the price feels justified to me. Gridiron has this and a blue set up now on their site.
