Hasbro: Fortnite Victory Royale Series Renegade Shadow Review

Fortnite character designs exist on a wackiness continuum with one extreme being six foot tall banana-people and on the other extreme we have just human soldier types with all sorts of strangeness in-between. Today we are going to look at a character who skews towards the regular military side of things, Renegade Shadow.

The box features some cool stylized artwork on the front and a digital render of the figure with accessory call-outs on the back.

The figure comes with a tactical submachine gun, an axe havesting tool, and Blast Radius back bling which features two rockets on a pack frame. The rockets look good peeking over his shoulder, though they do make me wish they were removeable from the holders and he had a rocket launcher to go with.

The axe is a single piece of gray plastic with a bit of metallic sparkle to it. There is one symbol on the front that jazzes the look up a bit.

The submachine gun is a unique version of the weapon and features an effective grungy paint job and some spikes that makes it look a little like a post-apocalyptic piece of equipment. It is a bit overlarge for the hand and cartoony in feel for my taste, but is keeping with the game design. Like other recent guns in the line, I do wish the barrel was deeper or they applied black to the center.

The figure also comes with goggles on, but they are soft plastic, removeable, and can be worn on his forehead.

Sculpting on this guy is solid and I really like the overall vibe. I get the feeling this guy was a soldier that has branched out on his own and added little touches of flair to his old uniform. The jacket is cool with a fur collar so pronounced that it kind of reminds me of the feathered collar on Wez from Mad Max. The jacket sleeves also have an interesting banded leather look that I really like.

The articulation is typical for the line with:

  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles
  • Ball and socket head, neck, mid-torso, and waist
  • Swivel biceps, thighs, and boots
  • Double hinged knees and elbows
  • Butterfly hinged pecs

The articulation has good range for the most part, but the butterfly hinges really don’t move at all on my figure. The ball joint in the torso allow for great tilt, but not a lot of crunch and the jacket overlay restricts backward movement.

The paint is solid on this figure, with a few different tones of gray and black along with metallic armor, buckle details and crisp symbol details. I also like that they added a bit of shading around the eyes and cheeks with the printed deco as it adds a bit of realism to his skin.

Overall I’m happy with this guy, he’s got a cool man in black mercenary for hire vibe, I like the display options with the goggles, and he looks neat teamed up with Metal Mouth.
