I love it when things line up correctly for #TurtleTuesday!
As I mentioned in my Slash First Look, of all of the different TMNT iterations NECA is handling right now, I think the comic looks are the most exciting to me. Of course I am still thrilled to be getting into the real weirdos of the cartoon line, and the movie series is expanding into later installments, but something just feels right about getting back to those comic roots, both the origins of the Turtles themselves, but also to get back where it all started for NECA, too. I cannot believe those original Turtles were released at SDCC in 2008(!!!), but we are finally getting to expand the Mirage Comics ranks.
When these new figures were revealed via our Toy Fair coverage back in February, I expected to see characters like Fugitoid, the Utroms, and Casey Jones. However, Renet was a bit unexpected (I should know better to expect the unexpected at this point), but most certainly welcome. The Mirage Comics series took the TMNT on some wild rides, and they met curious friends and foes along the way — Renet certainly qualifies as one of the awesome weirdos.
A teenage Timestress and apprentice to Lord Simultaneous, Renet quickly became an ally to the Turtles and they shared some crazy time-traveling adventures right from the start. Her teenage rebellion fit in well with the team dynamic, and while on the run from Simultaneous, their exploits carried from medieval times, to crossovers with Cerberus. However, Renet was far from a gimmick character and enjoyed a considerable amount of character development in her time on the comic panels. Her travels to the far future were quite touching, and she later made an appearance in the 2012 cartoon series.
With the heavy-hitters she is already surrounded by in this line, it might be easy to overlook Renet, but that would be a mistake because this is a really cool figure. I don’t have to comment on her unique look, that speaks for itself, but the execution and accessories are all great, too and she instantly makes for a unique and interesting addition to the Mirage shelf.
Renet continues the unique Mirage style with the stylized paint job that is one of the first things you notice with this figure. Once again, it is done so well to mimic those comic lines, but the work is careful to not overdo it. Her outfit is WILD to say the least, but all of the little clocks on her costume are cleanly painted, and the black accent lines are very crisp. Having several Mirage figures at this point, it is really neat to see this style carry through for consistency, but also not be too forward, so you can cheat these figures in with some of your other TMNT displays.
The sculpting work is solid as ever, and her form is true to the source, but at the same time more realistic in terms of proportion. This allows the frame to carry all of the articulation you have come to expect in these lines, and the double knees and elbows are certainly highlights. Renet has two portraits and the elaborate helmet is its own piece, and not attached to the hooded head.
The figure is also rich in accessories, and it includes a bevy of swappable hands (open, fists, and grips), a wire frame soft goods cape, down hood, dagger, scroll, and time scepter. There is also a Lord Simultaneous head included, and I find it hilarious that he can yell at her to hit the books, rather than pal around with the Turtles. I also want to add that the wire frame does wonders for the cape, and I while I am usually not a soft goods guy, this offering is really nice.
This is a really fun release, and if you are a fan of the Mirage Comics, Renet is a fantastic addition. She is numbered as “2” in this series, so she will follow Fugitoid, and should be shipping soon. Now, I know there is a bit of a “Sleeping Beauty” argument with this figure (make it PINK! make it BLUE!), but keen eyed observers saw that her helmet in blue was teased at SDCC. Now, we don’t know when or how that will happen at this point, but the red looks really sharp, so don’t pass on this IDW edition.
Like I said, Renet should be shipping soon, so if you have not gotten your pre-order in yet, you can do so at Dorkside or BBTS.
*Thanks to NECA for sending along this figure for a First Look
