In Case You Missed It: DC at SDCC22!

Last weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, DC brought announcements, first-looks and con exclusives directly to the fans.

 

DC’s panels were packed with San Diego Comic-Con exclusive giveaways, surprise guests and reveals, including Paul Dano dropping in on Jim Lee and Friends on Friday to talk about his upcoming series The Riddler: Year One. Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo also surprised fans with an announcement of the upcoming Batman/Spawn crossover special, coming December 2022.

The announcements kicked off on Thursday, with Tom King and Phil Hester’s upcoming series Gotham City Year One, and kept going as writer Joshua Williamson announced Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Ram V dropped in to the panel to announce he will be writing Super Swamp Thing as a part of the Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths Event.

 

There was plenty of news from Gotham City as well, with WB Games revealing the Batgirl character trailer for the upcoming Gotham Knights. DC announced that there will be a prequel comic book series, Gotham Knights Gilded City, so fans can fully immerse themselves in the new lore of the game–and get exclusive codes for in game items with each issue.

In a news packed panel on Friday, DC also announced a new Punchline series, written by Tini and Blake Howard; G.C.P.D.: The Blue Wall by Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley and artist Stefano Raffaele; and The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Carmine di Giandomenico.

 

Denys Cowan, one of the Milestone Media Founders, dropped in to announce that Static: Season One will continue with Vita Ayala and Nikolas Draper-Ivey on Static: Shadows of Dakota. He also revealed the trailer for the Milestone: Generations documentary streaming on HBO Max on July 29. The film examines the Milestone founders’ trajectory throughout the last 30 years, detailing their unwavering commitment, passion and perseverance to rise to the top of the comic book industry as black creators. With tenacity and dynamic artistic expression, the creators of Milestone Media continue to influence culture and ignite revolutionary change through characters that reflect the lived, black experience.

DC also announced a new Superman young adult graphic novel by writer and artist Sina Grace. Superman: The Harvests of Youth looks at a young Clark Kent, in high school in Smallville, as he grapples with the mortality of his friends and family, teen isolation and the seductive nature of online subcultures built around hate and anger. It features characters familiar to longtime Super-fans, like Lana Lang, as well as introducing new characters. Writer Josh Trujillo also shared a sneak peak at his upcoming series Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, and New York Times Bestseller Kami Garcia shared a sneak peak at her upcoming graphic novel Constantine: Distorted Illusions.

DC fans who went to any comics panels, or to the off-site Harley Quinn activation at Now or Never Comics also received a special discounted offer for an annual subscription to DC UNIVERSE INFINITE, DC’s fan-first, premium digital comic subscription service.

Fans of DC animation were given plenty of sneak peeks at all the great shows coming their way, starting with an advance screening of the first two episodes from Season 3 of Harley Quinn, coming to HBO Max on July 28. Cartoon Network also announced upcoming guest stars on hit series Teen Titans Go! will include director Zack Snyder and rap group De La Soul. For younger fans, DC debuted a musical short introducing the Batwheels before their animated origin special “Meet The Bathweels” debuts exclusively on HBO Max.

DC was back in Hall H on Saturday, with a panel spotlighting two of this year’s upcoming big releases, Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson, and Shazam Fury of the Gods starring Zachary Levi. Both stars were there to preview the titles, joined by David F. Sandberg, Asher Angel, Dylan Grazer, and Lucy Liu for Shazam, and Jaume Collett-Serra, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Quintessa Swindell for Black Adam. Fans were treated to trailer reveals and sneak peaks of both Shazam Fury of the Gods, in theaters December 21, and Black Adam, in theaters October 21.

Sandman fans also got a look at the upcoming Netflix series, revealing fan-favorite characters including The Corinthian, Matthew the Raven, and more. Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Boyd Holbrook, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Vivienne Acheampong, Jenna Coleman, Vanesu Samunyai, Mason Alexander Park, and Patton Oswalt took the Hall H stage alongside author Neil Gaiman and showrunner Allan Heinberg to talk about the series streaming on Netflix August 5.

It was also a packed weekend of awards, with Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #1 written by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art by Phil Jimenez winning two Eisners for Best Single Issue/One-Shot and Best Penciller/Inker. The artist Jen Bartel won an Eisner for Best Cover Art for her work on Future State Immortal Wonder Woman #1 and 2, Wonder Woman Black & Gold #1, and Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary Special. Writer James Tynion IV won the Eisner for Best Writer, for his work on The Joker, Batman, DC Pride 2021, and The Nice House on the Lake as well as his other titles, and The Nice House on the Lake won the Eisner for Best New Series. DC Editor-In-Chief Marie Javins also won a surprise award, as she was presented with the Inkpot Award during the Jim Lee and Friends Panel, given to individuals for their contributions to the worlds of comics, science fiction/fantasy, film, television, animation, and fandom.
