Thor: Love and Thunder was in first place again this past weekend. That’s not a surprise as the film didn’t face any major new competition. The film earned an estimated $46 million domestically a drop of 68.1% from the opening weekend. That’s on the higher end of second weekend drops for these types of films. The movie had mixed reviews so the impact of that might explain some of the drop. Domestically, the film has grossed $233.3 million after two weeks. Internationally, the film fared better earning around $320.7 million over the week to lift that total to $479.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little under $713 million.
With Ragnarok earning $850.5 million over its entire run, there’s little doubt the film will beat that. Will it cross $1 billion? We’ll see, but the bet is the film’s grosses will mostly be driven by the international box office.
Minions: The Rise of Gru came in second place again adding $26 million to its domestic gross. That now stands at $262.6 million after three weeks. Internationally, it earned around $80.3 million over the week to bring that total to $270.1 million. Worldwide the film has grossed $532.7 million.
Where the Crawdads Sing debuted in third place with $17 million.
Top Gun: Maverick dropped one spot to fourth with an estimated $12 million. The film has grossed a little under $618 million domestically continuing the film’s surprise success (we all knew it would be, but not these numbers). Internationally, the film added about $33.2 million to bring that total to $619.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $1.237 billion making it the top film of the year. It’s close to cracking the top ten domestic total of all time and is now #20 in the worldwide all time total. It’d need about $280 million to reach the top ten for that though.
Elvis rounded out the top five with an estimated $7.6 million. The film has grossed $106.2 million after four weeks. It added just $200,000 internationally over the week to bring that to $64.2 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $170.4 million.
In comic film news…
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earned $72,000 and bringing its domestic total to $411.2 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $500,000 over the week to bring that to $542.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $954.1 million. It looks like the film will fall short of the $1 billion mark.
The week’s overall success…
Initial numbers has 29 films earning $129,748,849 from 31,260 theaters. That’s an expected dip from last weekend’s impressive $238,305,756 from 26,576 theaters and 47 films. It’s another strong weekend for 2022. The average earning was $4,150.64 this past weekend, about half from the previous weekend’s $8,966.95.
