Hasbro: Marvel Legends Retro Collection Rhino Review

I have been saying it for awhile now – the retro card collection is currently my favorite Marvel Legends series.

I know, much of it is repaints or slight sculpting updates, and the accessories are usually limited, but there is no denying the buzz I get from adding classic characters in their iconic looks to my collection. I have been considering my collection on the whole as of late, and focusing on those versions of characters is my top priority. So, I look forward to new entries in this sub-line, and often times not just for the figures, but also the nifty packaging.

Spider-Man and is colorful cadre of rogues have been getting top billing in the retro card series, and over the past couple of years I have gotten the versions of these characters that I have wanted since, well, the beginning. While most of the figures fit in logically in a typical series format, some of the bigger guys have needed special releases. Kingpin came out last year and was pretty much perfect, and now Rhino follows him up wonderfully. Rhino was due not only to get a retro figure, but also to get back out there for collectors who missed his (now rare and pricey) previous build-a-figure release.

I personally found that BAF to be an overall nice figure with solid construction and great detail, but it just wasn’t the classic look of Rhino I have always loved. So, this new release had a solid foundation, but the Hasbro team did a great job of including new parts to make this true to the classic design, and not just cheated repaint. Most of that body works well here with a lighter grey deco, and the solid join construction easily supports this large and heavy frame. The shoulders have been updated to remove the peg hole previously used to connect the armor on the previous version.

As noted, this figure does get some new pieces from the BAF in the form of new hands and TWO new heads. The previous fists are included and are still my default choice, but two open/gripping hands are here, too. The wrist pegs are really short, but the hands stay in place well. The real highlights are the two new portraits, and they are really great. The sculpted details for both the closed mouth and gritted teeth versions are exactly what you picture for Rhino, and the paint is pretty perfect, too. I am partial to the gritted teeth, but you cannot go wrong here.

I am really taken with this figure. Rhino has had some good iterations over the life of Marvel Legends, but this is by far the best, at least for me. I realize this retro sub-line isn’t for everyone, and sometimes waiting through first version just to get a re-jiggered classic version can be frustrating. I have learned to be patient though, so when an iconic character gets figure that not in that classic look, I will wait for the retro series inclusion, so I hope it continues far into the future.

Do not miss out on this figure, he is great – so get yours a Dorkside Toys now.
