Funko, Inc. acquired Mondo, which is a subsidiary of Alamo Drafthouse.
Mondo is a high-end pop culture company that specializes in vinyl records, posters, toys, games, and other collectibles. In the games space, they have produced several party games, board games, and miniatures board games, including Unmatched, which was published via Restoration Games (see “Restoration Games and Mondo Games“). Tim League, Alamo Drafthouse Founder & Executive Chairman and Mondo Co-Founder, released a statement on the sale of Mondo to Funko:
“Over the past few months, we searched exhaustively to find a perfect partner who saw what was unique and special about Mondo and was in a position to meaningfully invest in Mondo, nurture the team, and further its reach and vision,” said League. “Funko is exactly that unicorn.”
League also mentioned that the COVID pandemic had been “brutal and harrowing” at Alamo and Mondo, and that they filed and emerged from bankruptcy during that time period. Funko’s CEO Andrew Perlmutter also commented on the deal:
“By leveraging our international distribution and licensing network, we feel well-positioned to expedite the growth of the Mondo brand,” said Perlmutter. “It’s an exciting opportunity to couple Mondo’s already stellar product assortment and aesthetic with Funko’s massive property library.”
