Todd McFarlane Plans 15 ‘Spawn’ Collections in 2022

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has announced an expanded graphic novel program for 2022 and beyond, with Image Comics scheduling 15 collected editions for this year alone, and more in 2023.

Some are continuations of existing series, including the Spawn Origins trade paperbacks (Vols. 21-24) and hardcovers (Vol. 11), the 500-page Spawn Compendium (Vols. 3 and 4), and the 620-page Spawn Deluxe Hardcover Vol. 5, an oversized, slipcased hardcover that will be available both as a regular edition and as a signed edition limited to 500 copies.

Others are new, including the first collections of the three new series launched in the last year: King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched, as well as Spawn’s Universe, which includes the double-sized one-shot Spawn’s Universe #1 and stories from Gunslinger Spawn #1 and The Scorched #1.

As in the past, Image will continue to release newer six-issue story arcs as trade paperbacks. In 2022 these will be Spawn: The Record-Breaker (see “Image to Publish ‘Spawn: The Record-Breaker’ TP”), Spawn: Aftermath, and Spawn: Omega.

McFarlane has expanded the Spawn franchise in the past year with the launch of three new series plus a one-shot (see “Todd McFarlane Plans Comic Universe Built Around Spawn”), all of which sold well in single issues (see “Sales of ‘The Scorched’ Break 270K”); in fact, they were four of Image’s top-selling comics of the century.

With the resurgence of the Spawn character and expansion of three new titles in his shared universe, there has been a loud demand for me to create a scheduled release of reprinting some of those stories into a range of collected editions,” McFarlane said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “More importantly, I believe that creating a steady schedule that both customers and retailers can depend on will only help serve this new pent-up demand. As a celebration of Spawn’s 30th year of publication (along with Image Comics’ same anniversary), we will be printing some never-seen-before collections. All this as I also move towards the ultimate goal of getting the Spawn franchise off the ground in Hollywood… which will only stoke the need for these types of editions. 2021 was a massive record-setting year for the Spawn Universe, and I plan to continue to deliver high-quality stories and products within the Spawn Universe that are reasonably priced.”
