HAMMERHEAD.
HAMMER.
HAMMERHEAD.
HAMMER.
Damn, this is the second brand-new-to-Marvel Legends figure I have done this week, and I am definitely a fan. Getting updates is cool and all, but when a first-timer comes around it makes the line feel even larger.
Despite what I just said, this is not the first time Hammerhead has shown up. It’s just that the last time, he was just a head. As a pack-in with Chameleon, Hammerhead didn’t quite feel complete. He was missing something. Something important.
Like…a body. Chameleon’s didn’t quite cut it.
This time around, Hammerhead is complete and fully functional, with a body that actually suits his stature much much better. I believe this stockier body initially belonged to the Happy Hogan figure, and it feels appropriate to Hammerhead, who has always been drawn on the thicker side. He’s always had some serious Edward G. Robinson vibes, so a thin body just won’t cut it.
It’s not straight reuse though, as he has a three-piece suit look with a vest as an overlay.
This body has pinned arms and pinless legs. The legs were a little stiff at first, but once I got them moving they did okay. I’ve noticed a touch more stiffness on the pinless limbs so far, but I haven’t had anything break yet. So far so good.
The figure as a whole look. quite nice. This is a good-looking suited body, and the additional elements and distinctive head make it look as if it were made for Hammerhead. They didn’t slack off in the paint department, giving him a well-done pinstriping on his pants and jacket. Hammerhead and his ‘30s-wannabe gangster aura wouldn’t be the same without that pinstriping.
The figure moves surprisingly well for a suited body. He gets decent range in his joints, and he can get a pretty decent lateral spread. His torso articulation doesn’t come out as well due to the overlay, but on the plus side he gets a massive amount of tilt in his head.
I’ve had a soft spot for Hammerhead ever since I first ran across him in a comic where he was fighting both Spider-man and Dr. Octopus. The idea of this flat-topped gangster guy headbutting his way to the top of the food chain was so comic booky. The head does a great job evoking his Dick Tracy villain-esque quality. You could serve hors d’oeuvres on that head. The paint printing looks pretty good. The eyes are beady and angry. He looks pissed.
Hammerhead comes with two sets of hands. One is a gripping paired with a gesturing/neutral hand, the other is a set of fists. His left fist has a set of brass knuckles, with the word HEAD backwards. Because when he punches you, he leaves a bruise with the word HEAD on it, like’s he’s just branded you.
Because he’s kooky like that.
His only other accessory is a baseball bat. It’s good for giving back-alley beatings, but I’d like to have seen a Tommy gun as well. He’s even got a trigger finger for it. I can dig one up from another toy, I’m sure, but it feels like it would have been a natural fit for his whole shtick.
Overall this is a well-done figure. Ever since we were teased with just the head in Chameleon’s package I was a little worried that they’d never do a full-fledged figure, and if they did they’d put him on an unsuitable body. But this one does the trick, and he looks great.
For a dirty rat, he looks just swell, see?
