R.E. Burke Was One of the First to Be Detained Under Trump 2
Fantagraphics has announced it will publish Visiting America: 19 Days In An I.C.E. Facility, the memoir of British cartoonist R.E. Burke, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in February 2025 and held for 19 days. The full-color memoir details Burke’s treatment in the ICE facility, which was run by the private corporation GEO Group, in which she was shackled and interrogated while her family and friends mounted an international campaign to free her. Burke also reflects on her fellow detainees and the support they offered each other, and she concludes with an epilogue with updates on some of them. Fantagraphics will publish the paperback in May 2027 with an MSRP of $29.99.
“This is a book that has moral imperative written all over it: Becky had to write and draw it and I couldn’t be happier that she chose us to publish it,” Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth, who edited the book, said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
Burke’s abduction was one of the first instance of ICE’s newly aggressive stance under the Trump Administration, and it had a chilling effect on other creators from overseas (see “Eisner Nominated ‘Banned Book Club’ Creators Speak Out on Canceled Book Tour”).
Burke has been banned from visiting America for ten years.
