The horror imprint IDW Dark will be publishing comics based on Blumhouse films, including The Purge.

That will be the first title out of the deal, coming late 2027.  Writer Dan Watters and artist Juan José Ryp tell a new story involving the premise of the film, about a world where any crime, including murder, is legal on one night a year.

Coming later are new stories based on M3GAN and Happy Death Day. M3GAN is about a killer AI doll, while Happy Death Day is a dark comedy horror mystery where a victim has to relive their last day alive until they find their killer.  That title will be written by Tim Seeley, while the original movie was written by comic writer Scott Lobdell (see “DVD Round-Up: ‘Happy Death Day’“).

IDW Dark began in 2024 with licenses of other horror films (see “IDW Launches Horror Imprint“), while Blumhouse has licensed the IDW title The Exorcism at 1600 Penn (see “‘Exorcism’ Optioned“) for a movie.  The studio has also licensed another horror comic, Something is Killing the Children, from BOOM! Studios for film and an animated TV series (see “‘Something Is Killing the Children’ to Blumhouse“).

Said IDW CEO Davidi Jonas, “Quality storytelling experiences are always our top priority at IDW, so partnering with Blumhouse to expand our horror imprint was truly a no-brainer decision.  Working with Blumhouse to continue exploring the compelling potential of their modern classics within the pages of the comics is a tremendous honor, and the creative conversations have been exciting.”
