Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons team and Studio X, the in-house team that develops Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters, announced their intent to form a union with the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

This union will become part of United Wizards of the Coast-CWA, the same union that represents the Magic: The Gathering Arena team (see “Workers Vote to Unionize“).  The members of the two teams cited “mounting instability within Wizards and the gaming industry, a desire for fair compensation that reflects their work, clearly defined career progression, and more” as the reasons they have decided to unionize (via the CWA press release).

“Everyone I work with makes our company, our game, and our community stronger by bringing their talent, expertise, and effort to making Magic,” said UWOTC-CWA member and Magic Rules Manager Eric Levine.  “Those incredible people deserve fair compensation, remote protections, clear career progression, and more. Supporting the people who make the game will ensure that Magic keeps getting better for years to come.”

The teams have sent an open letter to leadership this morning declaring their intent, and have given WotC till October 13, 2026 to recognize their union.
