Mad Cave Brings 1980 'Flash Gordon' Movie Comic Back to Print

Mad Cave Studios is adding to its library of Flash Gordon comics and graphic novels with a long out-of-print adaptation of the 1980 movie.  Flash Gordon: The Movie Adaptation, by writer Bruce Jones, artist Al Williamson, and colorist Rick Veitch, was originally published in 1980 to coincide with the release of the Flash Gordon movie.  Mad Cave will publish the 88-page paperback on July 7, 2026, with an MSRP of $17.99.

Williamson, who died in 2010 (see “Al Williamson RIP“) drew several issues of King Features’ Flash Gordon comic books in the 1960s and won the National Cartoonist Society’s Best Comic Book award for his work on that title.

The movie adaptation was originally released as a graphic novel, in both hardcover and paperback formats, by Western Publishing in 1980, and then serialized in three parts in issues #31-33 of Whitman Comics’ Flash Gordon series the following year.  These were reprinted in Flesk Publications’ 2009 Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon (see “Hardcovers from Flesk”) and in Vol. 5 of Dark Horse Comics’ Flash Gordon Comic Book Archives, published in 2011, but Mad Cave’s version appears to be the first standalone reprint.
