Rocketship Entertainment is launching its first monthly comic, Empiria, an allegorical epic fantasy by writer David K. Wilson and artist Jacque Solomon. The comic will be edited by two-time Eisner nominee and former Platinum Studios editor Lee Nordling (see “The Pack—A New Graphic Novel Packager“). The series will be distributed by Lunar, which also handles Rocketship’s graphic novels (see “Exclusive: Rocketship Signs Distribution Deal with Lunar“).
Monthly comics are a departure for Rocketship, which has built its catalog on graphic novels, most of which are collections of webcomics and webtoons and are crowdfunded before publication (see “Rocketship Entertainment Lines Up 17 Graphic Novels for 2022”). However, the publisher has also announced plans to release three Angry Birds comics (see “Rocketship to Publish ‘Angry Birds’ Comics and Graphic Novels”).
Empiria is set in a kingdom ruled by elves and teeming with tensions between different creatures, including dragons, unicorns, and humans. The corrupt elven king is more interested in selling things to his subjects than doing anything for them, a fascist gang of dragons attacks a unicorn, and a religion foments hate within the kingdom; matters come to a head when the elven prince is kidnapped on live television.
“[Rocketship] have been masters of publishing the work of independent comics creators, and I think they will hit it out of the park with this book,” Wilson said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
