ComicsPRO: BOOM! to Make All A Covers Returnable, Restart Thank-You Variants

BOOM! Studios had plenty of news for retailers at their ComicsPRO presentation, including new projects and some new programs for retailers.

Josh Hayes, VP, Consumer Sales and Marketing, announced that BOOM! will bring back thank-you variants, one per store, starting with Something Is Killing the Children #46, and will make all cover As returnable.  “We’ve always had a really aggressive returnability program,” he said.  “We’re actually going to make it bigger: We’re going to do every single cover A on every single book.”  In addition, BOOM! will spend more on direct-to-consumer marketing than it has in the last two years combined.

Deputy Publisher Bryce Carlson also had some news, including three new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series.  Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will be a new ongoing monthly series that will kick off with issue #0 on Comics Giveaway Day (see “PRHPS Reveals 2026 Not-Free-Comic-Book-Day Titles”).  Power Rangers Unlimited, another ongoing series, will feature characters from throughout the 30-year history of Power Rangers.  “It’s literally taking the box of toys and dumping them on the table and having some fun with that,’ Carlson said. And finally, Green Ranger will be a Tommy Oliver solo story set in an alternate future where he is the last Power Ranger.  All three will kick off in summer 2026. BOOM!, which acquired the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers license in 2015 (see “New ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Comic Book Series“), will also publish its backlist in compact comics format.

BOOM! will launch new series and backlist collections for its two newly acquired Hasbro licenses, Jem and the Holograms and My Little Pony (see ‘BOOM! Studios Nabs Two Hasbro Licenses‘).  “Jem and the Holograms is returning to monthly comics later this year,” Carlson said.  “We’ve got a limited series that’s going to finally conclude the cartoon storyline, and we’re working hand in hand with show creator Christy Marx on that.”  A new My Little Pony monthly series is also in the works, Carlson said, and BOOM! will release backlist titles for both series in a compact comics format.

In September, BOOM! will publish a graphic adaptation of John Kennedy Toole’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Confederacy of Dunces.  Albert Montes, who adapted Slaughterhouse Five for BOOM! will do the adaptation.  “We’re putting a lot of consumer facing energy and dollars into this one,” Carlson said, “so that we can be bringing graphic novel readers, and literary graphic novel readers specifically, into your shops.”
