DC Announces Facsimile Editions of the Original Issues, Plus Variant Covers and Deluxe Hardcover Collection

DC Comics announced facsimile editions of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns comic book miniseries as well as an array of variant covers and a deluxe hardcover book.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is one of the most revered comic book miniseries ever printed.  The original books, written by Frank Miller (illustrated by Miller and Klaus Janson), told the story of an aging Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to fight crime once again in Gotham City.  In the process, he gets involved in a government battle with Soviet forces trying to start World War III.  The miniseries eventually culminates in an epic confrontation with Superman.  This is one of the most celebrated Batman miniseries of all-time among collectors; the original books are all must have keys for most collections and the cover art for The Dark Knight Returns #1 even sold for $2.4 million at auction (see “‘The Dark Knight Returns’ Cover Art“).

DC is throwing its own 40th anniversary celebration of these books by releasing facsimile editions of The Dark Knight Returns #1–4 in February 2026. In the summer, they will release The Dark Knight Returns 40th Anniversary variant covers rendered by some the best talent in comics industry. On Batman Day 2026 (September 19, 2026), DC will release Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition.  This hardcover graphic novel collects The Dark Knight Returns #1–4 into a newly remastered premium volume.  DC will also release a line of merch for The Dark Knight Returns via an Artist Collection available on the DC Shop online shopping platform.
