Wizards of the Coast Unbans Two Cards in 'Magic: The Gathering' Commander Format

Rhystic Study and Thassa’s Oracle Survive Another Round of Bans; Jeweled Lotus Stays Banned

Wizards of the Coast unbanned two cards in the Commander Format, for Magic: The Gathering, on February 9, 2026.

The two cards that were unbanned are Biorhytm and Lutri, the Spellchaser. Biorhytm, a card that was originally banned because it could create a board state where a single player could conceivably take out all their opponents at once, was unbanned because WotC design staff wanted to create more “big moments” in Commander games where the game is turned completely upside down. This card has already been put on the Game Changer list.

Lutri, the Spellchaser was unbanned, but cannot be used as a Companion. As just a creature card or a Commander card in a Commander deck, Lutri is powerful in certain decks, but not as game-breaking as he once was thought to be.

Two notable cards that survived the ban announcements were Rhystic Study (see “Bad ‘Magic’ Sets“) and Thassa’s Oracle. These two cards have been on WotC’s Commander watch list for a while, but the CFP ultimately decided against banning them this time around. Also, Jeweled Lotus speculators were undoubtedly disappointed as  the designers and CFP didn’t unban this card. Copies of the Jeweled Lotus were rising in value a bit going into the announcement.
