The highest-grade copy known of Action Comics #1has sold for $15 million, blowing away the previous record price for a comic, which was under $10 million. The price for the CGC 9.0 copy was set in a private sale to a collector negotiated on behalf of the anonymous owner by Metropolis Collectibles / ComicConnect of New York, the company announced.
We last reported on this particular copy of Action Comics #1 in 2011, when ComicConnect sold it at auction on behalf of actor Nicolas Cage for $2.16 million (see “’Action Comics’ #1 Brings $2.16M”). The copy was stolen from Cage in 2000 and not recovered until 2011, when it was found in the contents of a storage locker sold at auction and returned to Cage.
The previous record high price for a comic, also a CGC 9.0, was for Superman #1, which sold at a Heritage auction for $9.12 million just a few weeks ago (see “Newly Found ‘Superman’ #1 Brings Record Price”).
