A wave of store closures is hitting GameStop, with hundreds of stores closing just this month. An unofficial blog tracking reported and confirmed (from GameStop website) store closings has tabulated 296 confirmed U.S. closings so far this month, with another 58 reported but not confirmed as of this writing.
GameStop closed nearly 600 U.S. stores in its fiscal year ended February 1, 2025 (see “GameStop Closed Nearly 1,000 Stores”). GameStop Closed nearly 1,000 stores worldwide in that fiscal year.
The cost-cutting has helped turn around GameStop’s financial performance, along with sharply higher sales in its collectibles category. The company showed a $77.1 million profit in the quarter ended November 1, 2025, a big jump from the $17.4 million profit in the same period in the previous year (see “Big Jump in Collectibles”).
