Yen Press has licensed Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury—Vanadis Heart, a manga spinoff of the most recent Gundam anime, by Chika Tojo, who was the artist for the manga adaptation of The Saga of Tonya the Evil.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, which premiered in October 2022 and streams on Crunchyroll, is the first Gundam television series to have a lead character who is both female and gay. The manga is set 16 years before the start of the anime and five years after the Vanadis research facility was destroyed in order to erase the technology developed there, which resulted in mobile suits that injured or killed their users. The story focuses on a “witch,” one of the developers of the forbidden tech, and a Gundam pilot. Yen Press will release the first volume in June 2026.
Gundam continues to be a wide-ranging franchise that is popular in many formats. The Gundam Card Game was released in summer 2025 and sold out quickly; retailers told ICv2 they were having a hard time meeting demand (see “Pro: ‘Magic,’ ‘Pokémon’ Leading Hot TCG Category”). A live-action Gundam film is in the works from Legendary Entertainment, with Sydney Sweeney in a starring role (see “‘Gundam’ Casting”).
