Image Signs Ongoing Series by 'Dungeon Crawler Carl' Artist

Image Comics has announced a new ongoing series written and drawn by Brett Bean, the artist for the upcoming Dungeon Crawler Carl: The Crocodile graphic novel (see “Vault Reveals Title, Lead Character for ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ Graphic Novel”).  Bean will work with colorist Jean-François Beaulieu on the series, which follows a half dwarf, half orc character, D’orc, who wanders into a magical, multifactional war, clutching his smart-alecky talking shield. D’orc is actually key to a doomsday prophecy, and as he gets to know the humans, elves, goblins, and other inhabitants of Sunderaine, he also accumulates enemies. Image compares the series’ deadpan humor to Skottie Young’s I Hate Fairyland, and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman blurbed it, saying, “You had me at magic talking eyeball shield.  Brett Bean creates a fantasy world like no other!”  The first issue will be released on February 4, 2026, with covers by Bean, Jorge Corona, and Jason Howard, a 1:25 incentive cover by Ryan Ottley, and a 1:50 cover by Ryan Stegman.

“I always gravitate to stories that have purpose, heart, and humor,” Bean said in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “I love characters that are flawed, believable, and feel real despite being in a very unreal world. There’s a lot of D’orc in me…”

In addition to his comics work, Bean designs puppets for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and does card art for Marvel Snapand Pairs (see “New ‘Falling’ and Pairs’”).
