Comic Retailer Books with Pictures Asks for Help

Well-known comic retailer and ComicsPRO board member Katie Pryde has started a GoFundMe to raise money to support Books with Pictures, the store she owns with partner Andrea Gilroy.  Describing personal and business challenges, the fundraiser seeks $42,500, which Pryde says will be enough to get bills current and allow the store to look ahead.

Pryde stressed the store’s support of their community, both locally and in the comics industry, in her appeal.  “On the one hand, this is the best job I’ve ever had the privilege to do, and I recognize that it isn’t owed to me,” Pryde wrote.  “Books with Pictures is a for-profit business, at least in theory, and I am mortified that it is not, right now, making a profit.  But at the same time, we work very hard to give back something of significant value to our neighborhood, to our city, and to the business of comics as a whole.  And I don’t want to shut all of that down, if the cost of keeping it is just swallowing my pride and asking for help.”

As of this writing, the fundraiser has raised $26,580 of the $42,500 goal.

Pryde has served on the ComicsPRO board of directors for some years and has also been involved in the group’s efforts to create a standard for product metadata (see “Metadata Project Update“).
