Immortal Studios has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the third issue of the wuxia comic Assassin G: A Heroine Reborn, as well as reprints of the first two issues, to make the series available at a time when interest is growing in Chinese genre fiction such as wuxia and danmei. The Kickstarter campaign has two retailer tiers, one for multiple copies of the first three issues and one for a broad selection of Immortal Studios’ Storyverse comics.
Assassin G: A Heroine Reborn is the story of Margot Gan, who was raised to be an assassin and assigned to wipe out a corrupt group of criminals, the Seven Cultivations Alliance. Her mission goes awry when she falls in love with the heir of one of the families, JP Yin. Margot based on the character Gan Shijiumei, a tragic heroine who was the central figure in Shiao Yi’s 1980 wuxia novel Gan the 19th Sister and the 1996 television adaptation. Shiao, who died in 2018, is regarded as one of the greatest writers of the wuxia genre. The comic was created by Shiao’s son, Payhuan Shiao, working with Chinese American writer Jen Troy and Chinese manhua artist He Tao.
Payhuan Shiao created Immortal Studios in 2021 to produce new work based on his father’s books (see “Dynamite Partners with Immortal Studios”). “It’s both an honor and a little surreal — like posthumously collaborating with my father,” he told ICv2. “Shiao Yi was a master of emotional depth, tone, and martial-philosophical storytelling who helped define modern wuxia. To now carry that legacy forward is deeply humbling and exhilarating. My goal is to honor the spirit and beauty of Gan the 19th Sister while bringing its timeless magic into today’s world — and setting the stage for an even larger universe of heroic storytelling.”
“My father’s work fused elegance, emotion, and martial genre into one seamless art — translating that from Chinese prose into English and a visual medium has been both thrilling and demanding,” he said. “Working alongside a new generation of creators from both America and China to reinterpret that spirit for modern audiences has been an extraordinary process. At its heart, Assassin G is the story of an assassin who develops a conscience, and falls in love while executing inter-generational revenge — a theme that feels both timely and universal. While the original tale ended in tragedy, our version remains poignant but more hopeful, pointing directly into the expansive Immortal Storyverse, where its legacy can continue to evolve.”
