It’s been a spooky week for Hollywood news; time for a round-up!
One of the biggest horror comics of the 21st Century, BOOM! Studios’ Something is Killing the Children, will be adapted for a movie and TV series by horror studio Blumhouse Studios, the companies announced. Blumhouse plans to simultaneously develop a live-action feature film and an adult animated series, with series co-creator James Tynion IV exec producing and series co-creator Werther Dell-Edera co-exec producing.
Anime topped the 2025 box office again this weekend as Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc powered to a strong opening, racking up $17.2 million at the box office, according to Variety. While not quite as impressive as the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle opening weekend (see “‘Demon Slayer’ Boffo“), this was still another anime hit for Sony/Crunchyroll that managed to top big money, U.S.-produced films at the box office, including Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, Regretting You, and Black Phone 2.
Skybound Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment will partner for an Energon Universe adult animated series based on the G.I. JOE, Transformers, and Void Rivals comics overseen by Skybound founder Robert Kirkman and published by Skybound, according to Deadline. Like Kirkman’s successful Invincible series on Amazon Prime, Energon Universe will have an adult focus. Lucifer’s Joe Henderson will serve as writer and showrunner for the series.
Netflix has acquired the film rights to the CATAN board game franchise from Asmodee, according to The Hollywood Reporter. They plan to adapt the classic Eurogame for TV and movies, both live action and animated, for which CATAN will primarily be the setting and landscape. Sony Pictures had previously shown interest in the CATAN IP, for a movie back in 2017 (see “‘Catan’ Headed for Big Screen“).
The series finale of Stranger Things is headed for a theatrical release, according to Variety. The two-hour finale will be streamed on Netflix and shown in over 350 theaters nationwide on December 31, 2025 at 5 p.m. PT. The last season of Stranger Things drops on Netflix on November 26, 2025 (see “‘Stranger Things’ S5 Dates“).
