Explore the Store: Newbury Comics

On Friday, September 19, we visited the Newbury Comics store in the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, a large retail marketplace around tourist site Faneuil Hall in Boston, a key location on the Freedom Trail and one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the U.S.  In addition to the main storefront on the ground floor, the store occupies much more space on the second floor.

The merchandise mix is definitely tourist-focused, with tons of inexpensive merch items in addition to comics and graphic novels, hobby games, and collectibles.  There were items to appeal to every level of engagement in geek culture, from none to deep, and every age and gender.  A family walking into the store could find something for everyone in the Newbury Comics product range.

The Newbury Comics chain, founded in 1978 on Newbury Street in Boston, now has 29 stores in six states from Maine to New York, and is likely the largest comic store chain in the U.S. by number of locations. The signage displayed here is Boston vernacular, in which “wicked” means “very,” popularized in the Boston-set movie Good Will Hunting.
