'Magic: The Gathering' Threatens to Jump the Shark

Wizards of the Coast announced Secret Lair: Secret Scare Superdrop, a wave of new drops sets for Magic: The Gathering, which will hit DTC preorder on October 13, 2025.

The latest Superdrop, which was unveiled at MagicCon: Atlanta, looks like it will truly test how far WotC can push the themes of Magic sets beyond the fantasy genre and still capture the interest of its fans. Older Magic fans were already grumbling about Universes Beyond sets including a Marvel’s Spider-Man release over the last couple of weeks, as the IP has little or nothing to do with the fantasy genre the original game was based on. Now, those same fans are facing down drop sets that feature Jaws, The Office, Iron Maiden, and the Furby IPs.

While the Jaws and Iron Maiden IPs have a fringe connection with creature types in the Magic: The Gathering Universe (sharks and zombies) and the Furby IP is an obvious Hasbro toy licensing crossover attempt, The Office seems completely out-of-bounds as Magic IP. There are probably fans of The Office that will buy these cards, but this IP has almost zero connection to the fantasy genre (other than that the Dwight Schrute character likes fantasy games) and seems like an overreach.

The Office drop set opens the door to a other modern, non-geek licenses from sitcoms, movies, and the like. This becomes a slippery slope for maintaining the integrity of the Magic property, as now in-house design questions like “Can cards from a Golden Girls, Seinfeld, or Friends drop set play in the game?” are on the table. If the answer is “yes” to that question, then Magic risks taking its IP beyond what the brand will support. WotC could even mark that occasion by printing a Happy Days drop set with a card that depicts Fonzie jumping over a Shark Typhoon while waterskiing.
