Marvel's The Punisher is Quietly on the Move

The Punisher is quietly becoming one of the most collectible comic book characters of 2025. His key comic issues are creeping up in value, slowly but surely, and his once semi-dormant fan base is coming alive again. As a brief example, a CGC 9.2 copy of his first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #129 was selling for around $3000 in mid-2025, and more recent sales of the same book in that grade are up about $200 to $300 in recent eBay auctions. Mid and lower-grade books are up as well, and potentially gradable raw copies are up about $100.

This upward trend in the prices of key Punisher books can be traced back to a few events in 2025 that raised this character’s profile. The first bump the Punisher received was from his appearance in Daredevil: Born Again that was released in March 2025 (see “‘Daredevil: Born Again’“). Prior to the Daredevil: Born Again release, Marvel Studios announced that they had greenlit a Punisher Marvel Special feature (see “‘The Punisher’ Marvel Special“). These two announcements created a little bit of momentum for Punisher collectible comics, but over the summer, the ball really got rolling when Marvel Studios revealed that The Punisher would be in the next Spider-Man movie (see “The Punisher Crashes ‘Spider-Man“). From that point on, The Punisher became the silently surging hotness among comic book collectors.

There are few key books that retailers should start looking out for in collections they purchase. Punisher keys sometimes come in as bulk, mainly because a lot of his 80s books were heavily printed and Marvel fans haven’t cared that much about the character since the Netflix series ended (see “‘Punisher’ S2“). However, with his resurgence as a popular character begins to pick-up, there are few books to keep an eye out for, aside from the obvious Amazing Spider-Man #129 (a book that many comic store owners wouldn’t overlook if it walked in):

Amazing Spider-Man #134 and #135: The second and third appearances of The Punisher are perhaps an bigger pain to find than his first appearance in #129. These two books are often overlooked as collectible books, and as a result, time and attrition have made good copies of these books relatively rare. They are worth about $200 each in high grades, about $100 each in mid-grades, and definitely worth picking up right now.

Marvel Preview #2: This book was published Curtis Magazines in 1975, an imprint of Marvel Comics. It contains the origin story of The Punisher as well as first appearances for Frank’s wife and Dominic Fortune. Marvel published the Punisher’s origin story in a magazine format to circumvent the Comics Code Authority (the origin story was a little violent for 70s comics). As a result, this book is rarely seen walking in a comic shop, and is worth about $100 in higher grades.

Marvel Tales #106: Not every collector can afford a $1000 Amazing Spider-Man #129. As a result, this first reprint for the Punisher’s first appearance is sought after as somewhat of a “poor man’s” copy of his first appearance. It is easily distinguishable from its yellow counterpart by its red cover, and the price of this book clocks in at around $20 in mid-grades and $50 in higher grades.

Punisher Limited Series #1: The Punisher broke out as a solo series character in 1986. Punisher Limited Series #1 has an iconic cover and is the first book that Punisher appears in a solo story. All five issues of this series are worth taking into a comic shop’s inventory. The first book sells for around $50 to $90 based on condition, and the other four are easy sales at around $20 a book.

Punisher #1: The first ongoing solo Punisher series from 1987 was heavily printed and hadn’t risen much above $10 to $20 until recently. However, the price of the book has roughly doubled for higher-graded copies (which are now about $30 to $40) with Punisher’s recent hotness.

Deadpool #54 and Punisher/Batman: Of all the “Punisher battles” crossover comics, these are probably the two most worthwhile in today’s collectible market. Deadpool #54 features the everyone’s favorite sassy merc battling the Punisher, and Punisher/Batman is a rare DC crossover fight with the Dark Knight. The value of these books fluctuate, but if they can be purchased cheaply, they are worth it.

Punisher #218, #219, and #220: The Punisher in War Machine armor has always been one of the coolest concepts that Marvel ever came up with (next to Shang-Chi in Iron Man armor).  As a result, these three books that have the first appearances of Punisher in War Machine armor, are just inherently cool and worth acquiring if they come in the door.Source: ICv2
