Illustrator and fashion designer Shin Haenuli will be a guest at Otakon 2025. She is best known for her work with the Lolita fashion brand Haenuli for over 17 years. Since 2012, Shin has expanded her art world to the United States, creating unique artworks that cross the borders of art and fashion.
Her best-known art series — “Their Story: The Story You Don’t Know” — features a skeleton and a maiden that sends the message “it is okay to be sad” and that it’s possible to find comfort during despair and sadness. With promotion from Alice Cooper, the American rock legend, this series became globally known and featured in over 30 countries. The world of “Their Story: The Story You Don’t Know” has been expanded through various media over the years, including the tarot card series “Wandering Spirit,” stained glass, painting, and digital art.
In early 2025, Shin held her first individual art exhibition in Los Angeles, showcasing the deeper side of her artistic vision. Shin is collaborating with Japanese Lolita brand Atelier Pierrot, fashion model RinRinDoll, and indie American brand Iris Garden. With this collaboration, her brand HAENULI is bringing more size-inclusive designs that can be enjoyed by many.
Through her work, Shin hopes to share with the world where beauty and sorrow coexists, and to remind others that even in sadness, people can find light.
Otakon 2025 will be held from August 8-10, 2025 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
