Close look at beautiful flowery artwork in the Pokémon TCG

The Pokémon Company is showcasing special Pokémon TCG artwork. Read on below to learn more:

Flowers have been a part of Pokémon TCG artwork since the very beginning, and we look at some of our favorites.

Spring is in full swing: the sun is shining, trees are as green as ever, and most importantly, flowers are blooming brightly. The Pokémon Trading Card Game features all kinds of environments in its artwork, and flowery backgrounds are no exception. As we celebrate the season, let’s put the petal to the metal and explore some of our favorite Pokémon TCG cards that feature flowers in their illustrations.

Illustrator: Keiji Kinebuchi

This Diglett card might not appear fancy, but the artwork, which first appeared in Base Set, is among the first in the Pokémon TCG to include flowers in its frame. Keiji Kinebuchi’s classic 3D render of Diglett—posed among what appears to be daisies—evokes feelings of nostalgia for the days when we were first becoming fans of Pokémon.

Illustrator: Mitsuhiro Arita

Don’t mess with Totodile! The Big Jaw Pokémon chases down a fleeing Oddish in a field of yellow flowers that are angled to frame the action beautifully.

Illustrator: Atsuko Nishida

Gardevoir from the Diamond & Pearl—Secret Wonders expansion is arguably one of the most powerful competitive cards of all time, dominating the 2008 Pokémon TCG World Championships. But it’s more than a menace in battle—it’s also a terrific work of art that just screams flower power.

Illustrator: sui

Skiploom itself is already flower-like, so it’s no wonder that illustrator sui portrayed the Cottonweed Pokémon in a warm setting: a garden filled with red and pink flowers.

Illustrator: Tomokazu Komiya

Cherry blossom season has come and gone, but we can happily reminisce with this artwork of Kricketot. The Cricket Pokémon appears to be hanging out on a river dock with a flurry of pink petals dancing across the air.

Illustrator: Yumi

Ralts is commonly illustrated alongside bunches of flowers, but Yumi’s illustration of the Feeling Pokémon from the Sun & Moon—Burning Shadows expansion is filled with a unique level of bliss. We’re enjoying the flowers this spring too, Ralts.

Illustrator: Narumi Sato

Oh, to bee a Beedrill flying among a meadow of what appear to be tulips, poppies, and all kinds of colorful flowers. Narumi Sato’s soft, watercolor style truly shines in this pastoral illustration—we yearn to frolic in its floral fields.

Illustrator: Tomokazu Komiya

We can’t even begin to tell you what these flowers are—or whether the setting is a lake or a bog—but that’s the charm of Tomokazu Komiya’s zany art style. All that matters is that Gloom appears to enjoy the whimsy of the scene, with its vibrant reds and purples, as much as we do.

Illustrator: Yoriyuki Ikegami

It wouldn’t be a flowers article without Yoriyuki Ikegami’s gorgeous illustration of Gardenia utilizing her green thumb. Among the colorful flora, you can also see Cherrim, Cherubi, Bellossom, and a sneaky Ivysaur!

Illustrator: Susumu Maeya

Deerling and Sawsbuck are in their Autumn Forms here (which is appropriate for our friends down in the southern hemisphere), but don’t let that distract you from this two-part artwork that captures the changing of seasons through color blocking . You’ve got red flowers, blue flowers, pink flowers, yellow flowers, and more livening the scene.

We hope you enjoyed stopping to smell the roses while browsing these cards as much as we did, Trainers. Here’s a challenge: look at your Pokémon TCG collection and find every card that features flowers in the artwork. There’s likely to be plenty!
