Official Charizard ex deck list strategy revealed for Pokémon TCG Pocket

The Pokémon Company is continuing to reveal new content for Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket. Read on below to learn more:

Burn bright with a glimmering Charizard ex from the Shining Revelry expansion.

Charizard has been setting battles ablaze in Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket since it debuted in the Genetic Apex expansion as both a Stage 2 Pokémon and a Stage 2 Pokémon ex. Genetic Apex’s Charizard ex saw success when partnered up with Moltres ex, but the Charizard ex recently released with Shining Revelry might benefit from a different approach. Instead of the usual reliance on setting up one massive attack to take a game, it takes the time to Stoke its flame before launching consecutive attacks (though you could still pair it with Moltres ex for explosive results). Read on to learn more about how to take advantage of Shining Revelry’s Charizard ex and its Energy acceleration, alongside a couple of new Pokémon and Supporters that can really help it burn its brightest.

2× Charmander (Shining Revelry)
2× Charmeleon (Shining Revelry)
2× Charizard ex (Shining Revelry)
2× Cyclizar (Shining Revelry)
2× Professor’s Research (Promo)
2× Iono (Shining Revelry)
1× Cyrus (Space-Time Smackdown: Palkia)
1× Red (Shining Revelry)
2× Poké Ball (Promo)
2× Pokémon Communication (Space-Time Smackdown: Dialga)
2× Giant Cape (Space-Time Smackdown: Dialga)

Game plan: The key to this deck’s strategy is the Energy acceleration provided by Charizard ex’s  Stoke attack. For only one Fire Energy, Stoke takes three Fire Energy from the Energy Zone and attaches it to Charizard ex—this is game changing as a Stage 2 Pokémon, which would usually take a ton of effort not only to gather the Energy it needs to attack, but to get it into play in the first place. Also, unlike Genetic Apex’s Charizard ex, this Charizard ex’s hard-hitting attack, Steam Artillery, doesn’t require discarding Fire Energy to attack with it—if you can manage to get and keep this Charizard ex in play, it could theoretically launch Steam Artillery every turn for a hefty 150 damage.

The primary concern is getting Charizard ex into play, and that calls for a Pokémon that can soak up attacks from the opponent while evolving Charmander all the way up to the Stage 2 Charizard ex while it’s on the Bench. For this deck, acting as an unconventional wall Pokémon is Shining Revelry debutant Cyclizar, to pepper damage with its Overacceleration attack. It’s not as beefy as classic wall Pokémon, but its low retreat cost makes it easy to pivot out of the Active Spot once you’re ready to Stoke with Charizard ex. (You can also obtain a Shiny Cyclizar card by completing Shining Revelry collection missions!)

You’ll also need the right Trainer cards to help draw the cards you need and to support Charizard ex once it’s in play. Iono, the supercharged new Supporter card, provides additional consistency, giving you a second chance at finding the cards you need while potentially slowing down your opponent’s strategy. Once Charizard ex can use Steam Artillery, it may still struggle to one-hit KO certain Pokémon ex—a strong case for the inclusion of the new Red Supporter card, which boosts the damage of your Pokémon’s attacks against opponent Pokémon ex.

Ready to try out this Charizard ex strategy and heat up your next battle? Add the cards included in this deck list to your collection by selecting the Charizard ex Starter Deck (Shining Revelry) in the Shop when you complete the newly added ex Starter Decks missions in Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket. These missions are available for a limited time until April 26, 2025, at 10:59 p.m. PDT, so don’t miss out!
