Manga is cooler than ever, and if you’ve ever been curious about how one of Japan’s best exports is made–or even want to create your own–then you’ll want to check out the upcoming book, Dr. Mashirito’s Ultimate Manga Techniques. The book is co-written by Kazuhiko Torishima, the sixth editor-in-chief of one of Japan’s biggest manga publications, Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and includes insights on how manga is written, drawn, and distributed. Dr. Mashirito’s Ultimate Manga Techniques launches May 13, and preorders are discounted to $22.50 (was $25) at Amazon.

Dr. Mashirito’s Ultimate Manga Techniques will guide budding artists with tips from Dr, Mashirito, a character from Akira Toriyama’s Dr. Slump manga who was modeled after Torishima. Using the “Torishima Method,” the book will teach you various lessons in creating manga-style art and the mindset needed to produce this kind of work based on Torishima’s time working with prolific manga creators like the aforementioned Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame, as well as Masakazu Katsura of Video Girl Ai and Koji Inada of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
Since the late great Toriyama has been mentioned, it’s also worth looking at several books based on his artistic legacy. Dragon Ball: A Visual History is a must-have for fans of the series as this is a comprehensive look back at the manga. It’s full of extra details like additional promotional material, creator commentary, notes, sketches, and posters from throughout the history of the original Dragon Ball series, and there are rarely seen sketches included. We’ve included a few other art books that collect Toriyama’s work on Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest, and more in the list below. While they won’t teach you how to draw manga, they’ll definitely inspire you to aim big once you start absorbing them through your eyes.
