There weren’t a lot of new titles on the list of the top 20 best-selling Author, Manga, and Superhero graphic novels according to Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan data for December 2024 (12/1/24 – 1/3/25) provided to ICv2.
The Author list includes all 10 volumes of Solo Leveling, as well as a lot of other familiar properties: Lore Olympus, The Hobbit, The Walking Dead, Invincible. The only December release on the chart is Vol. 8 of the Chinese boys-love series Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi. That’s quite a different lineup from December 2023 (see “December 2023 Circana BookScan“), which featured a good handful of different manhwa and webtoon titles. Most of those series have slipped off the chart in recent months, but Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation seems to have legs, as it was also on the 2023 chart.

Similarly, if not quite as dramatically, the manga chart features a handful of perennial best-sellers, including three volumes of Dark Horse Comics’ deluxe edition of Berserk and 16 Shonen Jump titles from VIZ Media, all but one of which (Kagurabachi) have been adapted into anime (Uzumaki is not a Shonen Jump title). Dadandan, which was pretty hot in November (see “November 2024 Circana BookScan“) has cooled down, but there are still four volumes on the Manga chart, including the latest one, a December release. In fact, all the December releases in the Top 20 were new volumes of long-running series.

DC Comics dominates the Superhero chart, with 12 titles, including three different editions of Watchmen. Four of their Compact Comics titles are on the chart, which tracks with recent trends. In fact, the same four title were on the November 2024 chart. As with the other charts, the Superhero chart is mostly familiar titles, including perennial chart-topper TMNT: The Last Ronin and Tokyopop’s Nightmare After Christmas “manga.” Newer titles include the two volumes of Transformers, the anthology Joker: The World, and Oni Press’s Cult of the Lamb, based on the game of the same name.
