Legend in the Mist Voted Most Anticipated RPG of 2025

Son of Oak Game Studio’s Legend in the Mist has been named the Most Anticipated Tabletop Roleplaying Game of 2025 in EN World’s annual survey. The upcoming RPG received more votes than other high-profile projects, including Daggerheart by Critical Role, Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG, MCDM’s Draw Steel, and Modiphius’ Discworld adaptation. The results were announced last Friday, concluding the final weeks of voting in 2024.

Legend in the Mist is the first fantasy RPG to use Son of Oak’s Mist Engine, which replaces traditional stats with a keyword-based system for action resolution. The game raised $855,000 during its Kickstarter campaign in early 2024 and combines its game mechanics with a focus on nostalgic fantasy storytelling. The game is visually defined by artwork from illustrator Daniel Pinal and draws inspiration from sources like The Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, and Princess Mononoke.

The game system allows players to integrate character backstories, personality traits, and motivations directly into gameplay, offering an alternative to traditional systems focused on attributes and skills. Features such as variable power levels for party members, support for various magic systems, and options for tactical gameplay are also part of the system. The Legend in the Mist Corebook is designed to support a variety of settings and themes, with a focus on rural and pastoral elements. A companion book, Hearts of Ravensdale, provides a setting and ready-to-play adventures.

Son of Oak has announced that backers will begin receiving digital copies of game content starting January 31, 2025, beginning with player rules and an introductory comic.

The game is scheduled for a digital release in Spring 2025, with a print version following in Summer 2025. Pre-orders are currently available through the Son of Oak webstore.
