Ever wondered what would happen if Steven Spielberg’s film Minority Report was adapted into an anime? That never officially happened, but Psycho-Pass shares quite a bit in common with the 2002 sci-fi film. Seasons 1 and 2 recently released on Blu-ray, but you’ll probably want to wait to add it to your collection now that Walmart has an exclusive box set with both that costs substantially less. Psycho-Pass: Seasons 1 + 2 Blu-ray Box Set is available to preorder for $40 at Walmart and releases February 4.
$40 | Releases February 4,
Walmart’s exclusive box set is quite the bargain compared to the individual seasons that released on Blu-ray on November 5.
Psycho Pass Season 1 carries a $60 retail price and is currently priced at $41.47 at Amazon. Meanwhile, Psycho Pass Season 2 retails for $40 and is on sale for $32.84 at Amazon. So, even with Amazon’s sizable discounts, you’d still spend $74.31 on Seasons 1 and 2 individually.
Unless you really want to watch the anime on Blu-ray now, or need a gift for the holidays, it makes far more sense to preorder the box set from Walmart and wait until February 4.
The Blu-ray box set contains the following special features:
- Trailers
- Season 1 Audio Commentaries: Episodes 5, 11, 13, 18
- Season 2 Audio Commentaries: Episodes 4, 8, 10
- Sakura-Con Parts 1 & 2
- Textless opening and ending songs
Psycho-Pass debuted in 2012 with a 22-episode first season. Psycho-Pass 2, which is now often referred to as Season 2, ran for 11 episodes in 2014. The well-received anime returned in 2019 with an eight-episode arc. Psycho-Pass has also been turned into multiple movies. The first movie, which released in 2015, is discounted for a limited time at Amazon. You can get the Blu-ray edition of Psycho-Pass: The Movie for $23 (was $35). Psycho-Pass: Providence released in 2023 and earned great reviews. The Blu-ray edition of Providence is up for grabs for $29 (was $40) at Amazon.
Psycho-Pass has been praised for its high-quality animation and well-told dystopian narrative.
Set in a future version of Japan, Psycho-Pass tells the story of a legal system where even thinking about crime can put you on the radar of a special taskforce. Thanks to a computer network constantly monitoring the biometrics of every citizen, law enforcement is able to stop crime before it happens by pursuing people who have been labeled with a high “Crime Coefficient” that measures their potential to break the law. To make things even more interesting, inspectors charged with apprehending pre-crime suspects are aided by Enforcers, potential criminals who serve as bodyguards, and both operatives use a “Dominator” gun that can only fire when approved by the Sibyl System.
Another great anime on sale–that also happens to have the word “Psycho” in its title–is Mob Psycho 100. Amazon has discounted the entire anime series across its three box sets, and if you’re looking for a heartfelt story that features incredible animation, this anime will not disappoint you. These are limited-time deals, so once they reach their sales threshold the special will be over. It’s a tale of a boy who possesses god-like psychic powers but yearns to live a normal life in a city filled with malevolent spirits, clairvoyants with world domination schemes, and the world’s greatest con-artist.
