Manhwa Falters, Manga Diversifies, and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Rules Once More
Manhwa that aren’t Solo Leveling are looking scarce, manga is more diverse than ever, and The Nightmare Before Christmas continues its seasonal surge on the lists of the Top 20 best-selling Author, Manga, and Superhero graphic novels according to Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan data for October 2024 (10/6/24 – 11/2/24) provided to ICv2.
For the second month in a row, the hardcover edition of MrBallen Presents is the number one title on the Author chart, and the hardcover of Vol. 7 of Lore Olympus is number 2, with the paperback editions further down the chart. Vol. 1 of Lore Olympus is also on the chart.
Alan Moore’s long-awaited opus The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic (see “Top Shelf to Publish Alan Moore’s ‘The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic’“) is at number 6. Perhaps because of the $49.99 price tag, or because it was released on October 15, this title did not make it into the Adult Top 20.
Nine of the Top 20 Author titles are manhwa, but seven of those volumes are Solo Leveling. In February, by contrast, there were 16 volumes of manhwa, in a variety of genres, on the chart (see “February 2024 Circana BookScan“). On the other hand, Vol. 1 of Under the Oak Tree, one of the top titles on the Manta service, is on the chart for the second month in a row and may have some traction.
Four of the titles on the chart are adaptations of prose works, including the third volume of Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens: A Graphic History, which was just released on October 29.

The Manga chart, on the other hand, is showing a lot of variety in both titles and publishers. The newest volume of My Hero Academia tops the list, with Vol. 1 of Dark Horse Comics’ deluxe hardcover edition of Berserk at number 2. There are three volumes of these hardcovers in the Top 20, and Kentaro Miura is the only creator with three titles on the chart. While most of the titles are shonen action series, horror and romance make the chart as well.

For the second month in a row, and for the second October in a row, Tokyopop’s adaptation of The Nightmare Before Christmas bumps perennial leader Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin out of the top spot on the Superhero chart. Four of DC Comcis’ Compact Comics collections are in the top 20, and Larry Hama is on the chart twice with two very different titles, the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero! compendium and Deadpool vs. Wolverine.
