George Takei’s new graphic memoir is due out from Top Shelf Productions in June 2025.
It Rhymes With Takei is a followup to Takei’s best-selling They Called Us Enemy, about his childhood experiences in an internment camp for Japanese Americans (see “‘They Called Us Enemy’“). The creative team is the same: Takei, Harmony Becker, Steven Scott, and Justin Eisinger, joined by colorist José Villarrubia.
This new book covers an important part of his adult life, his coming out. It also shows his closeted life before, his global fame, how he decided to come out as gay at the age of 68, and how he navigated the resulting high-profile status. His personal journey is put into context with changing attitudes, American progress, and modern LGBTQ+ history.
The 328-page color hardcover is priced at $29.99.
