The latest video from the official Dungeons & Dragons channel has provided an overview of the upcoming changes to the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. Players can expect new magic items and expanded crafting rules, offering more customization in their adventures.
The new Dungeon Master’s Guide chapter focuses on different types of treasure, ranging from coins and gemstones to magical items. It introduces new crafting rules that build on the basic magic item crafting found in the Player’s Handbook (2024). The Dungeon Master’s Guide provides more detailed rules for crafting advanced magical items, allowing players to craft a variety of items, from wands to magical staves.
To craft a magic item, characters will need proficiency in the Arcana skill, the appropriate tool for the item, knowledge of the required spells, and time and gold. The crafting rules take into account the rarity of the item, which affects the cost and time required. The process is flexible and depends on the availability of materials, which is determined by the Dungeon Master.
The new crafting rules are designed to give players more control. Players can craft items they desire, putting their personal mark on their equipment rather than relying on what the DM decides they find during adventures. This provides more opportunities for players to use their character’s gold in meaningful crafting projects.
While the expanded rules give players many options, the Dungeon Master’s Guide still limits crafting of artifacts. These powerful, unique items are not available for players to craft, leaving the DM in control of their distribution. The video also mentioned that the new book will include a number of new magic items, including iconic items from the original 80s D&D cartoon, such as Hank’s energy bow and Presto’s hat of many spells.
The new crafting rules also interact with Bastions, which are player strongholds introduced in the new Dungeon Master’s Guide. Certain Bastion facilities can make crafting faster or provide access to otherwise rare materials.
In addition to the crafting rules, the video discussed sentient magic items. These items have their own alignments, personalities, and the potential for conflicts with their wielders. Sentient items add another layer of roleplaying opportunities, presenting challenges as they pursue their own agendas.
