Osprey Games has announced the release of The Terror Beneath, an investigative roleplaying game set in a world of Weird Folk Horror. The game is scheduled for release later this month and is inspired by the works of Welsh author Arthur Machen. Players will take on the role of investigators navigating a world filled with mysterious and occult forces in the aftermath of the Great War.
Powered by the GUMSHOE Quickshock system, The Terror Beneath places a focus on investigation and mystery-solving as part of the Gold Tiberius Society. This society was formed to address the growing threat posed by ancient and pagan gods who are attempting to breach the mystical Veil that separates their world from humanity. Players will encounter a range of dangers, including creatures from folklore, occult scientists, and secretive organizations.
The game’s narrative draws on Arthur Machen’s blend of folklore, detective fiction, and occult science. Players will work together to explore strange phenomena, uncover clues, and confront supernatural threats. The GUMSHOE system ensures that key clues are discovered during gameplay, allowing the story to progress while offering opportunities for problem-solving and character development.
The Terror Beneath also introduces a unique mechanic called “Bleed,” which represents the influence of otherworldly forces on the game world. As the Bleed level increases, players may face more powerful threats, adding an additional layer of challenge to their investigations.
The game will be available on October 22nd in the US and October 24th in the UK.
