D&D Developers Share New Insights on the Bastion System Ahead of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide Release

The upcoming 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide will include the anticipated Bastion system, as detailed in a recent video discussion with D&D content creator Todd Kenreck and developers Chris Perkins, and James Wyatt. The video offers players and Dungeon Masters further insight into how the mechanic can be implemented in their campaigns.

The Bastion system is designed to give players creative control over a part of the game world, offering a unique space for each character to develop. These Bastions, ranging from wizard towers to rogue hideouts, provide both narrative depth and mechanical benefits. Players can customize their Bastions with special facilities that unlock as characters level up, adding new elements like libraries, gardens, or even theaters, depending on their character’s class and preferences.

A mystical village scene at twilight evokes the charm of a Dungeon Master's Guide illustration, featuring tall, intricately designed wooden houses with slanted roofs. Illuminated windows bring a warm glow against soft blue hues. In the foreground, water lilies float serenely in a pond—a homage to classic D&D aesthetics.

While Bastions offer in-game advantages, they operate in the background, allowing characters to continue their adventuring careers without interruption. Players can return to their Bastions between quests, issuing orders to maintain, craft, or recruit, all while their Bastion evolves alongside them.

A hand-drawn floor plan of a ground floor, much like a Dungeon Master’s Guide map, features various rooms and labeled "Up" and "Down" for staircases. Intricate decorative detailing is at the center, reminiscent of D&D developers' creativity, with multiple living spaces and functional areas.

The developers also discussed the potential for unique storytelling through Bastions. In different campaign settings, such as Ravenloft, Bastions could take on more atmospheric or eerie characteristics, adding another layer of immersion. Additionally, players have the option to combine their Bastions with those of other characters, building shared strongholds with cooperative benefits.

The left page depicts a castle in a green valley under a blue sky, while the right reveals one amidst mountains with dramatic clouds, perfect for D&D developers' worlds.

The full details of the Bastion system will be available in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, set to release in November. Pre-orders are open now, with both physical and digital bundles available.
