Popular ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Commander Advisory Group Community Leader Resigns

Josh Lee Kwai, CEO of The Command Zone podcast, has resigned from the Commander Advisory Group (CAG). The CAG is an invited group of Commander community leaders who assist and advise the Commander Rules Committee (CRC or RC) by offering their perspectives on the format.

This resignation comes after the recent Commander Rules Committee ban announcement, which drew the ire of Magic: The Gathering Commander/EDH fans (see “Fire Commander Rules Committee“). Kwai’s resignation statement was made public via his X account (see below). In the statement, he said that he felt privileged to provide input to the CRC about the format and wished nothing but the best for the CAG and the CRC.

The reason for his resignation was not discussed much by Kwai in the statement itself. However, in a previous X post on September 23, 2024 (see below), Kwai states “I don’t like the bans. I think it’s a bad call. If you’ve watched our content over the years then I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you.” Thus, it is reasonable to surmise that Kwai’s input given to the CRC was likely contrary to their final decision to ban these staple cards from the format (see “Backlash“).

The Command Zone podcast, started by Kwai and Jimmy Wong, has 737,000 subscribers on YouTube and is one of the more prominent Commander-related podcasts on the platform. The YouTube channel features both The Command Zone podcast as well as Game Knights, which both draw thousands of viewers per episode. Game Knights has featured celebrity guests such as Post Malone, Joe Manganiello, Xolo Mariduena, and more on various episodes.
