SDCC News: VIZ, Marvel Announce New Ultraman/Spider-Man Manga

Serialized Simultaneously in Japan and the U.S.

Marvel Comics is teaming up with Shogakukan and Tsuburaya Productions to produce a new Ultraman/Spider-Man manga that will be released on the VIZ Manga digital service simultaneously with Japan.

Ultraman: Along Came a Spider-Man, by writer Shigenobu Matsumoto and artist Tomo Hirokawa, will kick off with chapters 1 and 2 on VIZ Manga on August 13, with new episodes every Tuesday; the newest episode will be available for free each week, with older chapters available to VIZ Manga subscribers.  VIZ Media will publish a collected edition in print in summer 2025.

In the series, Spider-Man and Doctor Doom travel from Marvel Earth to Ultraman’s Tokyo, where Doctor Doom joins forces with Ultraman foe Alien Mefilas and his kaiju army, and Spider-Man teams up with Ultraman to fight them.  The Avengers will make cameo appearances as well.

The digital launch is timed to coincide with the August 14 release of the first issue of Marvel’s print series Ultraman x Avengers (see “Ultraman to Cross Over into the Marvel Universe for the First Time“).

“The contrast in how our two sets of heroes approach their roles is fascinating to see play out, but they have a lot of similarities as well,” said Kei Minamitani of Tsuburaya Productions in a statement accompanying the announcement.  “In both the Shogakukan and Marvel titles, we watch how our heroes grapple with these differences before ultimately reconciling to find greater solutions.  It has been incredibly special to explore the concept of heroism through the perspectives of these two very different sets of heroes.”

“This manga will be an epic showdown at a cosmic level, but it’ll have plenty insightful themes and touching moments as well,” added Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski.
