DC Launches Compact Comics; ‘Solo Leveling,’ Shonen Jump Titles Continue Strong Sales
DC Comics’ Compact Comics debuted, and Solo Leveling and Shonen Jump titles continued to rule, on the charts of the Top 20 best-selling Author, Manga, and Superhero graphic novels according to Circana (formerly NPD) BookScan data for June 2024 (6/2/24 – 7/6/24) provided to ICv2.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, was once again the top seller in the Superhero Top 20. Despite being a pricey hardcover, it has dominated the chart since it was released two years ago, and IDW Publishing has spun its success into a whole line of TMNT comics. A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Jennika—The Fifth Turtle, debuts on the June 2024 chart, giving IDW a solid quartet of Turtles in the Top 10.
DC debuted its new line of Compact Comics in June (see “DC Launches New Line of ‘Compact Comics’“), and three of them are in the Superhero Top 20. Interestingly, both the Compact and the 2019 regular edition of Watchmen made the Top 20, and while the Compact Comic Batman: Court of Owls had the fourth-highest sales, a number of other Batman titles also appear on the chart, albeit further down.
Skybound’s (Image Comics) first Transformers trade returns to the chart for a second month in ninth place, and another Energon Universe trade, Duke, debuts at number 13.

Vol. 1 of Solo Leveling tops the Author chart, and all eight volumes currently available are in the Top 20, as the sales bump it got from the anime continues. Two other manhwa also make the list, the most recent volumes of The Dangerous Convenience Store and Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, which means half the chart is Korean comics.
Vol. Six of Lore Olympus, released in May, takes two slots on the chart, second place for the hardcover and 15th for the paperback, with the paperback edition of Vol. 1 in 20th place.
A Chinese comic, Vol. 6 of the action-packed boys-love fantasy Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi, is in third place; this series has been showing up on the chart whenever a new volume comes out, as the popularity of manhua continues to grow.
The other titles are a true mix, including the graphic adaptation of The Hobbit, the latest Critical Role trade, George Takei’s memoir They Called Us Enemy, and Emil Ferris’s My Favorite Thing Is Monsters Book Two, a May release that is charting for the second month in a row.

Vol. 38 of My Hero Academia was the top-selling manga in June 2024, with Vol. 10 of Kaiju No. 8 behind it at number 2. The Kaiju No. 8 anime began streaming on Crunchyroll in April, but this series doesn’t seem to have gotten as much of a boost from anime as other Shonen Jump titles. Only two volumes of Kaiju No. 8 made the Top 20, Vol. 1 and Vol. 10, the latter a June release. The anime ends with Vol. 5 of the manga, so one would expect to see strong sales of that volume, as happened with Jujutsu Kaisen (see “January 2024 Circana BookScan“): The second season ended with Vol. 16, and sales of that and all the subsequent volumes made it into the Adult Top 20 and stayed there. There are 8 volumes of the Jujutsu Kaisen on the June chart.
Vol. 1 of Dark Horse Comics’ Deluxe Edition of Berserk is on the Manga chart, as it is almost every month, and Vol. 2 is on this month’s chart as well.
