Universal Grabs ‘A Vicious Circle,’ Cheadle and Boat Rocker Developing ‘Mindset,’ Fox Gets ‘Proof’

Three comics from independent publishers are being developed for movies and television.

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to BOOM! Studios’ Eisner-nominated comic A Vicious Circle by writer Mattson Tomlin and artist Lee Bermejo. The three-issue series follows an assassin who shares a curse with another man: Every time they kill someone, they are both forced to travel through time to different eras. The first issue was nominated for a 2023 Eisner Award in the Best Single Issue/One Shot category, and Bermejo was nominated for Best Painter/Multimedia Artist for his interior work; it was also one of the top-selling comics in terms of dollar sales when it was released (see “Top 50 Comics – December 2022”). Tomlin will write the screenplay for the adaptation. Proximity Media and BOOM! Studios will be producing, with Proximity’s Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler slated as producers and Rebecca Cho as executive producer.  Cho and Zetra Evans will oversee the project for Proximity Media. On the BOOM! side, Stephen Christy will be the producer, Adam Yoelin will executive produce, Mette Morkjaer will be co-producer, and SVP of Production Development Ryan Jones will oversee the production.

Vault Comics has announced that indie entertainment company Boat Rocker and actor Don Cheadle’s production company This Radicle Act are teaming up to adapt Zack Kaplan and John J. Pearson’s comic Mindset as a television series. Set in the near future, the sci-fi story follows what happens after a tech company accidentally creates a mind-control app. Executive producers include Boat Rocker’s David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, and Nick Nantell, Cheadle and This Radicle Act President Kathryn Smith-Forge, Vault’s Damian Wassel and F.J. DeSanto, and Kaplan. Boat Rocker’s catalog includes Orphan Black: Echoes (AMC), American Rust: Broken Justice (Prime Video), and Beacon 23 (MGM+). Cheadle’s acting credits include Secret Invasion (see “Trailer for ‘Secret Invasion’”), Avengers: Endgame, and Captain Marvel.

Fox is developing Alex Grecian and Riley Rossmo’s Proof, the story of a sasquatch and an FBI agent investigating cryptids, as a television series, according to Deadline. The supernatural crime procedural features a sasquatch and an FBI agent who investigate cryptids. Image published the series, which ran for 28 issues in 2007-2010 and was previously optioned for TV by Kickstart Entertainment (see “Image’s ‘Proof’ Optioned for TV”). Fox Entertainment Studios is producing; Westbrook Studios’ Terence Carter and David Boorstein and Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm are also on board as executive producers, and Grecian is also a producer. Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott are handling the adaptation.
