Titan to Publish ‘Mazinger’ Sequel, ‘UFO Robot Grendizer’

Titan Comics will publish a French sequel to Go Nagai’s UFO Robot Grendizer anime and manga, which were part of the long-running Mazinger giant-robots franchise. The new series is also titled UFO Robot Grendizer, and the creative team includes writer Xavier Dorison and artists Denis Bajram, Brice Cossu, Alexis Sentenac, and Yoann Guillo. It will be published in comics format and will kick off on September 4, 2024, with a 56-page first issue that will have covers by Derrick Chew, Bajram, Takeshi Miyazawa, and Colm Griffin, as well as a UFO Robot blueprint cover by Bajram.

A reboot of the original anime, titled Grendizer U, will launch in July 2024 in Japan and has been licensed for European distribution; no North American license has been announced.

The original UFO Robot Grendizer anime started out as the third installment in the Mazinger franchise, which kicked off in 1972 and popularized the concept of human-piloted robots, or mecha. Grendizer debuted in 1975 and had a limited release in the U.S. as part of the Force Five anthology series (for which it was renamed Grandizer). However, the series was very popular in France, where it was known as Goldorak; this is also the original title of the French comic. Nagai wrote several manga adaptations of the anime, none of which have been licensed in English.

Titan’s acquisition is the latest of several French manga (manfra) to be imported to the U.S.; Ablaze has published sequels to Leiji Matsumoto’s Captain Harlock (see “Exclusive: Ablaze to Publish New Captain Harlock Saga”) and Masami Kurumada’s Saint Seiya.
