Contention Games will release Slay the Spire, a new cooperative deckbuilding game, into retail on July 25, 2024.
Slay the Spire, designed by Gary Dworetsky, Anthony Giovannetti, and Casey Yano, raised $3,939,337 from 29,661 backers on Kickstarter recently (about $133 per backer) and is now ready to head to stores. It is based on the video game series of the same name by developer Megacrit. The video game featured a CCG-based combat system where players were rewarded with new cards to play by defeating enemies on their way to battle bosses.
The deckbuilding game runs along the same lines as the video game. Players will craft a deck for a hero, defeat creatures, and gain enough power to slay the spire. Along the way, players will collect relics of immense power to boost their abilities enough to take on the bosses and eventually defeat the spire.
The game box contains 4 miniatures, 450 art sleeves, over 650 cards, 4 player boards, 2 main boards, tokens, dice, and more. It is for one to four players, ages 12 and up, and plays in 60 to 90 minutes. This game will retail for $114.99.
