When it comes to mecha anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the biggest names in that genre. The original series–which is on sale for a steep discount–was genre-defining stuff, and years later, an ambitious remake set across several films gave the classic anime the care it deserves. The Rebuild of Evangelion series recently came to an end, and a brand-new edition of the final film is releasing soon. You can preorder the new steelbook edition of Evangelion: 3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time at Amazon ahead of its July 2 release. The upcoming edition is discounted to $30, down from $37, at Amazon.
$30 (was $37)
The existence of the new steelbook edition of Thrice Upon a Time is somewhat surprising. The film released on Blu-ray last October, both in standard 1080p Blu-ray format and in 4K via a cool limited edition.
The main difference between the upcoming release and the original Blu-ray version is the steelbook case. Neither the standard Blu-ray or 4K limited edition came with a steelbook case. But if you already own the 4K version, you probably wouldn’t want to pick up the steelbook edition, as it only comes with standard Blu-ray discs.
But for those who don’t own the movie already or want to upgrade, the steelbook edition comes with English and Japanese versions of the film across two discs. For the extras, you get promotional reels, trailers, and TV commercials.
It’s also worth noting that the 4K limited edition is currently on sale for $56 at Amazon (list price is $80). The limited edition comes with a 4K UHD disc as well as standard Blu-ray discs for the film and extras. The limited edition is bundled with a 28-page book, 16.5 x 11.7-inch poster, and five art cards.
Alternatively, you can snag the standard Blu-ray edition of Thrice Upon a Time (no steelbook) for $21 (was $30). The steelbook edition is currently priced at $30 (was $37), but with Amazon’s preorder price guarantee, you’ll get the movie for the lowest price offered between the time you order and release. You can also preorder the steelbook edition at Target for $30.49 or Walmart for $37.
Thrice Upon a Time is a terrific movie that brings the story of Shinji and his fellow Eva Unit pilots to a satisfying conclusion. To help complete your set, you can also pick up a couple of the other movies in the four-film series at a discount, though the first film in the series, You Are (Not) Alone, is tricky to find in stock.
As mentioned, Amazon is currently offering a great discount on Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Complete Series on Blu-ray, which drops the price to $36 (was $60). And if you’re really looking to spoil yourself, the Neon Genesis Evangelion soundtrack is another great purchase. This LP release has two translucent blue vinyls adorned with ethereal black smoke and is housed in a colored gatefold jacket with illustrations of the series.
Finally, if you’re not looking to add to your Blu-ray collection, you can catch these films on Prime Video. They’re all available to stream–as part of an Amazon Prime subscription–but with the ephemeral nature of the streaming market, who knows how long they’ll be up for? And since the first movie is out of stock in physical format, Prime Video is a good option–even if you wind up watching the others on Blu-ray.
