‘Dune’ Opens Big; More ‘Superman’ Casting; Bendis Signs First-look Deal; ‘The Fable’ Gets a Date; ‘Ghostbusters’ Final Trailer; ‘El Gato Negro’ Casting; ‘Neuromancer’ to Be Adapted

Spring has sprung a bit early, and Hollywood news is popping up all over. It’s time for a round-up!

With great reviews and the cast and director on a massive press tour, Dune: Part Two opened with a blockbuster-level weekend of $81 million domestic and $97 million international for a $178 million total, according to Variety.  The domestic opening was nearly double the $41 million first weekend of the first film in the series, which also went straight to streaming as part of Warners’ 2021 Covid strategy.

James Gunn and DC Studios have cast Perry White in the upcoming Superman movie (previously titled Superman: Legacy), according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The Wire‘s Wendell Pierce will assume the mantle of Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s boss.  Superman was recently fast-tracked by Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav, and started filming in Atlanta on February 29, 2024 (see “‘Superman: Legacy’ to Begin Filming“).

Brian Michael Bendis has signed a first look deal with Amazon, according to Variety. As part of this deal, Amazon has started developing series for Jinx, Murder Inc. and Pearl (see “‘Pearl’ on a New Mission“).  Jinx had previously been optioned for a movie starring Charlize Theron with Universal, back in 2004, but it never came to fruition (see “Jinx“).

Disney+ has set a release date for The Fable anime series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The anime, which will start streaming on April 7, 2024, is based on the best-selling hitman manga by Katushisa Minami, published by Kodansha (see “Kodansha“).

Columbia Pictures has dropped the final trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (see below). This movie will hit theaters on March 22, 2024 (see “‘Ghostbusters’“).

Apple TV will adapt Neuromancer into a streaming series, according to VarietyNeuromancer is based on the novel by William Gibson about a future where humans live in virtual reality, which was adapted into a comic by Marvel in 1989.  Neuromancer had previously been optioned for a movie back in 2017 (see “‘Neuromancer’“).

Amazon recently ordered a series based on El Gato Negro, according to Variety.  The series, based on the comics by Richard Dominguez, will be shot in both English and Spanish, and star Diego Boneta.
